Cathy
Jacobson-Guzy started playing tennis at the age of 9 in Pittsburgh,
PA. She took to the game quickly and was soon ranked either
number one or two within her age group in the Allegheny Mountain
Tennis Association. During her high school tennis career, Cathy
was the City of Pittsburgh Doubles Champion for four consecutive
years from 1976-1979 and the Pennsylvania State Doubles Champion
for three years from 1977-1979. She participated in many National
U.S.T.A. Invitational Tennis Tournaments and was selected to
take part in the National Sports Festival (Junior Olympics).
In 1979, she received a tennis
scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh. During her successful
college
tennis career, where she competed as the #1 or #2 singles and
doubles player all four years, she also earned the MVP Award
in 1983. After graduating from Pittsburgh with a B.A. in Communications
with a minor in Physical Education, she moved to Southern California,
and in 1983, began teaching tennis at the Billie Jean King
Tennis Center in Long Beach. She soon earned her U.S.P.T.A.
Professional 1 certification and quickly progressed from teaching-pro
to
Head-Pro then to facility manager. She also worked as an
assistant coach at Marina High School in Huntington Beach as
well as Cypress College. In 1993-1994, she served as Head Coach
at St. Joseph's High School in Lakewood, CA. Cathy has also
helped in the development of many players on the Long Beach
Wilson High School girls' Varsity Tennis teams.
The Billie Jean King & El
Dorado Park Tennis Centers has been Cathy’s home for
the past 21 years. In 1993, on behalf of the City of Long Beach’s
Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine, she established "First
Serve Tennis, Inc." and became the Director of Tennis and exclusive
operator of the Billie Jean King and El Dorado Park Tennis
Centers. At that time she also began managing the Parks and
Recreation adult and youth tennis contract classes throughout
the City of Long Beach.
Under Cathy’s inspired direction and
leadership, tennis has expanded and flourished in the City
of Long Beach. She looks forward to introducing and involving
more and more people to this wonderful sport – a game
that can be enjoyed for a lifetime!
